Obituary of Phillip L. Penrose

Phillip L. “Butch” Penrose, 72, Seward went home to be with the Lord and his family August 19, 2023.   Born December 21, 1950, in Johnstown. He is the son of the late Russell, Sr., and Sadie (Sherman) Penrose.  Also preceded in death by brothers Russell “Sam” Penrose and Timothy Penrose, Sr.; beloved nephews Brian K. “Punk” Drenning, Jr. and Gary A. Penrose, Jr.; Son-in-law Tony Miske.

Survived by loving wife Deborah (Gallo) Penrose; Mother-in-law Rosalie Horner; Daughter Christine Miske Johnstone and husband Kevin; Son Phillip “Buddy” Penrose and wife Courtney; Grandchildren Brennan Penrose; Maisie Penrose; Serenity Miske. Also survived by beloved sister Veronica “Vickie” Drenning; brothers David Penrose and wife Gloria; Wayne “Tom” Penrose and wife Theresa; Gary Penrose, Sr., and wife Debbie; beloved niece Cheyenne Drenning and other numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws

Butch worked as an auto mechanic and body repairman; a machinist for Bethlehem Steel and Trinity Industries; and a supervisor for Safari Cleaners. He loved hunting, fishing, and classic cars.  He always wanted to own a “67” Pontiac GTO Convertible. He enjoyed serving as head coach for Seward Little League, was honored to serve as mayor, councilman and community center president in Seward Borough for years.  His greatest love was his wife and family, and that love will live in their hearts forever. 

The Penrose family wishes to extend a special thank you to cousin, Chuck Fritz and friends that helped with homecare, Tiffany, Jill and Amanda of Penn Hospice and staff at Scenery Hill Nursing Facility for their compassion and care during Butch’s last months.

Family and friends will be received from 3-8PM Tuesday at Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, 139 Ligonier St., New Florence, where a service will be held 10 AM, Wednesday.  Pastor David Bowman officiating.  Interment Benshoff Hill Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.
